DESCRIPTION

The first floor of a cottage is often raised on piers to provide better views. In areas prone to flooding, piers are also used to elevate the cottage above potential flood zones. Sometimes, lattice or small horizontal strips of wood lath are used to cover the sides of the piers, blocking winds and protecting cars parked below. The large, cool carport area created by moving the vehicles out is frequently used as a ground-level entertainment area or a place to store the boat. Even in areas not requiring pier construction, cottages are usually built on piers for the additional benefits of better views and protected parking. An optional foul weather entry on the ground level can be an excellent way to bring in weekend provisions during rainy weather.

The hip roof design is the most stable option for high-wind areas and requires less maintenance than a design with gables and dormers.

The floor plan of this design has the main living or great room area on the top floor, with most of the bedrooms below to maximize views. However, this plan can be modified to exchange levels if desired. This plan also includes two main suites, making it easier for two small families to share for a summer getaway.
